Debt problems that cause daily problems for the UK's consumers could be alleviated with the addition of a water meter to the British homestead.
This manner of helping to ease utility bills has been suggested by the director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com.
Ann Robinson says that should a household contain more bedrooms than it does people, a water metre would be a cost-effective way to save a household around £56 every 12 months.
Ms Robinson makes the comments as regulator Ofwat announced the typical bill is set to go up for British households, to hit a figure as high as £356 a year, by April - representing a rise of 4.6 per cent on last years tally.
Should a water meter not be suitable for any particular household however, Ms Robinson is keen to add that there's plenty of other options available for people with debt problems.
She explains that if a water metre isn't the right choice for consumers, people should look at where they can make alternative savings.
She says: "Switching energy supplier can save up to £458 a year, while being on the best deal for your home phone, broadband and TV bundle can cut £261 off your household bills."
Debt Expert Kevin Still says: "Above inflation rises in water supply are reflective of wider problems with increases in essential household costs for people struggling with their personal finances. Switching energy supplier, if there is no existing payment arrears, is an obvious first step. Our sister company MoneySave Solutions was established to assist UK consumers, including those with debt problems, to get the best products & services that make up the core costs in their household expenditure."
