The popularity of online shopping could mean many of the UK's credit card users will need to seek debt help in tackling their debt problems.
Purchases over the web have been made by 5.9 million credit card users in the last three years, according to research by Sainsbury's Finance.
The minimum repayments on credit cards will mean more personal debts are incurred by Britains consumers.
But Sainsbury's says there are credit cards out there which offer customers returns of one per cent cash back on what they spend.
It was also found the average amount spent online using a credit card is £192, while two-thirds spend less than £100.
Director of Atlantic Financial Management, Kevin Still says, "The Internet offers a very cost effective way of buying essential household expenditure items, but there is sometimes a temptation to use a credit card instead of a debit card because of concerns over purchase protection and sometimes just convenience.
This can lead to credit card debts building up if not properly budgeted for."
