If the austerity measures weren't enough for consumers to contend with this winter - then household bills could cause further problems for the Britons facing an unmanageable debt spiral.
According to new research from uSwitch.com, six out of ten people say they are concerned about managing their debt in the face of costly fuel bills, as winter approaches.
Another 20 per cent of people say they are already having difficulty paying bills even before the peak of winter has set in, because of other debt reasons such as loss of income or poor debt management.
The survey also suggests that 73 per cent of homes have already had to cut back on the amount of debt they owe on bills.
Kevin Still of Atlantic Financial Management said "we could see an increase in people seeking debt solutions, such as Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) this winter as people face job uncertainty, benefit cuts and pricier fuel bills."
