46 million people living in the UK today could be facing more debt reasons thanks to a rise in household bills, according to the results of a new survey.

The research was published the week by consumer service, uSwitch, who said that 93 per cent of people questioned say they expect spending on services within the home to go up – with food, energy and phone bills the hardest hit.

British food inflation went up to 3.8 per cent in August - the highest point recorded since April 2009, and is expected to be one the debt reasons which will see the biggest increase.

Experts believe UK food inflation could be as high as 7 per cent, by the end of 2010.

Director of Atlantic Financial Management Kevin Still says, "Continuous reduction in disposable income will mean that many UK households are struggling to meet contractual payments on their credit card debts and other unsecured borrowing.

Many have faced three consecutive years of rising costs and reductions in income and potentially need to seek professional financial and debt advice."
