Debt levels have meant that the amount of people struggling to keep warm in colder weather has doubled over the last five years.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has revealed figures which show that the number of households in fuel poverty has jumped to 4.5 per cent between 2004 and 2008.
DECC predict that the next set of figures will show this number decrease, but if Treasury plans to cut the emergency cold weather payments come to fruition, many more people could be seeking debt help just to keep warm.
Kevin Still of Atlantic Financial Management has urged Britons struggling with fuel bills this winter to visit www.energyswitching.co.uk to start saving money.
He says, "It is vital that people prioritise payment of energy bills, even if you are facing debt problems."
The plight of these households won't be helped by the abolition of Consumer Focus, which has long campaigned for cheaper energy bills.
