Students will be left with "crippling levels of debt and many universities face utter devastation as a result of horrific cuts".
That's the opinion of the National Union of Students (NUS) after Lord Browne's review of university education recommends removing the current cap on fees, which could see them soar up to £12,000 a year.
The report suggests that repayments would now start when the graduate was earning £21,000, rather than the current £15,000 threshold. However, this could ultimately make them more likely to seek debt help.
This is because Lord Browne has confirmed that students should pay a higher rate of interest and if they have to wait for a better paid job to start paying off, the interest will only increase their loan debt.
