Drivers who put the wrong fuel into their car could end up needing debt solutions after it was discovered that a quarter (23 per cent) of breakdown policies don't cover it.
Defaqto looked at nearly 300 (288) breakdown policies and found that many drivers may have to pay out thousands of pounds to rectify their mistake, which could leave them seeking debt help.
The analysts' Mike Powell adds that "even those motor breakdown policies that do cover such an eventuality will tend to find that the extent of the coverage is limited to towing the car to a garage or to their destination."
Misfueling can cost more than £3,000 to put right and that doesn't include any extra debt incurred by needing to replace the vehicle whilst it is under repair.
