Britain will become a "dark, brutish and more frightening place" if the government's proposed spending cuts take place, as more people are left seeking debt solutions.
This warning comes from TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber at the organisation's annual congress in Manchester, as the government seeks ways to cut the national debt.
Mr Barber told delegates that "these are not temporary cuts, but a permanent rollback of public services and the welfare state".
He also warns that the cuts are politically motivated, rather than necessary to help solve the nation's financial problems.
He adds that the TUC will back workers who feel the need to strike if they fear that pay cuts and job losses will force them into debt.
