Energy regulator Ofgem are going to investigate potential mis-selling by four of the 'big six' energy firms, which may offer help for those who have been driven to debt due to high bills.
Npower, Scottish Power, Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and EDF Energy face being questioned by the regulator about their face-to-face and telephone sale practices.
All four have indicated that they will work with Ofgem during the investigation.
The decision has been welcomed by online comparison sites uSwitch.com and Moneysupermarket.com, as they hope the investigation will save consumers money and steer them away from needing debt help.
However, the investigation may take some time, meaning that ripped-off customers may still need to find debt solutions for the time being.
