Taxpayers have had their collective debt levels increased by more than £1bn in the past six years due to Labour's inefficient benefits system.
This is according to incumbent Employment Minister Chris Grayling, who points that Britons may have also had more debt placed on them once it is established exactly how much extra benefit has been paid out due to fraud and error.
The minister remarked that "that's exactly why [the government] set out plans for a complete overhaul of the benefits system."
Earlier this month, David Cameron announced plans to recoup more than £5bn (£5.2bn) lost each year across the whole welfare system due to fraud and error.
If even a portion of this was saved, it could help ward off the need for debt solutions for many by reducing their tax obligations.
