Labour has branded new government welfare plans as a "shocking betrayal of pensioners".
This comes after the coalition announced plans to review universal welfare payments, which may involve freezing the winter fuel allowance.
Labour leadership candidate David Milliband has stated that "up and down Britain, pensioners rely on this benefit to get by," and claims that "the prime minister's dishonesty is unacceptable."
His viewpoint is backed up by Dot Gibson, from the National Pensioners Convention, who states that the winter fuel benefit is vital as cold-related illnesses claimed the lives of more than 35,000 (36,700) pensioners last winter.
Without the benefit, pensioners may need to look towards debt solutions in order to keep their homes warm in colder weather.
Kevin Still, director of Atlantic Financial Management, says they are concerned that they have a "number of pensioners on Debt Management Plans (DMPs) that had to use credit cards to make ends meet and ended up in serious debt problems. It is not just about reductions in benefits, but rising cost of living where income does not match this growth."
