The numbers out of work and rising debt levels have led to a large increase in people contacting a mental health help line.
Breathing Space, which is run by NHS 24, reports that in the last year, calls received by the service increased by 16 per cent to nearly 60,000 (58,528).
Officials indicate that the true figure may be even higher, as "many hundred" calls couldn't be answered due to lack of resources, although they reassure people who feel stressed due to debt problems that more staff have been taken on.
Dr George Crooks, the medical director of NHS 24, remarks that needing debt help often magnifies "an underlying mental health problem, either anxiety, stress or depression."
