New wage rules may require debt help

Low-paid workers may be driven to seek debt help as a result of the new National Minimum Wage rules which are being introduced next year.

The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) believes that debt may be a serious consequence, despite the rules, as they will prevent low-paid workers from taking part in travel and subsistence expense schemes favoured by some firms.

The group believes that there should be a wider review on expenses so that low-paid workers aren’t driven into debt problems.

They also raise the prospect of travel costs discouraging people from working altogether, which in turn could increase debt levels for the wider population through having to fund benefits.ADNFCR-2613-ID-19918975-ADNFCR
