Britons will have to find millions of pounds more for tax bills after the scrapping of the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC), according to environmentalist Geroge Monbiot in his Guardian column.
This could lead to more Britons seeking debt solutions, as their income and savings face a further squeeze.
He argues that scrapping the SDC will save the country £3m, but modest estimates in a recent report show that measures to save energy and reduce waste have cut the state's bill by more than £60m.
Mr Monbiot calls scrapping the SDC "stupid, irrational and counter-productive" and says a lot more would be saved by scrapping the Trident nuclear scheme.
The news is a further blow to Britons already faced by unprecedented levels of debt and may lead to more seeking debt management help.
