More people may need to seek professional debt management services after the HMRC announced that it intended to limit the hours people could call for tax advice.
In order to save costs, call centres will be closed on Sunday and have their Saturday hours reduced. This will give less opportunity for people with debt problems to get in contact about how they could better their tax situation.
The move has drawn criticism from the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG), with their chairman, John Andrews, calling it a backward step. He also accused HMRC of failing to fully assess the impact of the changes.
This follows HMRCs decision last month to close or cut down the hours of their Enquiry Centres, where people could get help in person.
