People living in rented or social housing are struggling with debt worse than ever before, according to a charity.
The CCCS says that it has seen a dramatic rise in the number of people seeking help to pay for their accommodation, with many fearing that their levels of debt will leave them homeless.
They commented that whilst it is not unusual for people living in rented accommodation to seek debt advice, it has historically been for other forms of debt, not the monthly rent.
Recent figures from Shelter Scotland show that over 3,000 (3,297) people in the country were evicted from their homes in 2008-9, the majority of which were for failure to pay the rent.
Kevin Still, director of Atlantic Financial Management, says: "Prioritising you rent, utility and council tax payments is core part of providing quality debt advice and structuring a debt solution that doesn't put your home and family at risk.
Many people pay store card and credit card debts ahead of these essential costs. When you have or are threatened by debt problems it is essential to budget for every penny on a daily basis to avoid unnecessary bank charges and payment failures."
