Banks are only just getting round to deals with complaints that have come in since mid-2007, leaving many to seek debt solutions.
The bank complaints were put on hold due to the banks contesting a test case against the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which they ultimately won.
As a result of the backlog, banks and building societies had to deal with over two million (2.014m) complaints in the last six months of last year, compared to a little over 850,000 (867,427) in the first six.
Kevin Still, director of Atlantic Financial Management, commented: "A 132 per cent increase in complaints about banks and Building Societies in the second half of 2009 tells a compelling story about the reality of treating customers fairly and the pent up backlog from OFT case."
He also believes that people with financial difficulties or debt problems have borne the brunt with accumulated bank charges.
