Over 85,000 (86,444) have used an online charity's debt help tool to help them with their financial problems in the first three months of 2010.
This represents over half the amount of people who used the service in the whole of 2009. Last year, the CCCSs Debt Remedy site was helped over 150,000 (152,872) people.
They say that the growing popularity is due to the anonymity that using a website offers, compared to seeking help with finances in person or over the phone.
However, Atlantic Financial Management director Kevin Still believes that people looking at online debt help are more likely to be 'browsing' and will contact someone for financial help directly once they decide what they need.
He says: "It is our experience that many people put off dealing with their personal debt problems for up to nine months, but when they make a decision they want to act quickly."
