More than a fifth (21 per cent) of Britons have hidden debt from their partners and nearly a third (31 per cent) hid it from their entire family.
The new figures from the Post Office also show that the amount of hidden personal debt in the UK totalled in excess of £55bn (£55.1bn).
Of those who have hidden their financial problems, nearly four fifths (78 per cent) had kept it under wraps. Of the fifth (22 per cent) who hadnt, the majority (60 per cent) had been caught out by others, rather than admitting it themselves.
Psychologist Donna Dawson believes that hiding debt causes much greater levels of stress and anxiety. She recommends getting it out in the open, so that debtors can get the help with finances that they need.
