The number of adults not working rose by over 40,000 (43,000) to 2.5m during the three months up to February, official figures have shown.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) says that the unemployment rate is now at 8 per cent, which is the highest since 1996.

The largest rises were felt in Yorkshire and the East Midlands, both of which saw 13,000 more people out of work over the period.

Youth unemployment rose 4,000 in the December to February period, with 929,000 16-24-year-olds now without jobs.

However, the number of benefit claimants actually fell in March. Now, 1.54 million claim unemployment benefits, down over 30,000 (32,900).

Kevin Still, director of Atlantic Financial Management says: "It is not just the rise in unemployment that is a concern, but those falling of the 'statistical' radar.

"Many people have debt problems arising from loss of income. Atlantic has invested heavily in providing income optimisation services for those requiring managed debt help where they may not have been used to claiming benefits they are entitled to."ADNFCR-2613-ID-19735604-ADNFCR
