Nearly half (43 per cent) of all British households have had to pay extra money to energy companies following a discrepancy between the estimated and actual bill.
This comes from a survey by uSwitch.com, which also reveals that the public have named energy suppliers as the worst culprits for getting bills wrong for the fourth year in a row.
Britons could be forced to seek help with finances as a result of the inaccuracies, as the average amount owed after a billing discrepancy is now over £150 (£153). This is 8 per cent higher than last year.
In an attempt to avoid finding themselves in debt caused by these unexpected bills, more Britons are now checking their own meters. In the last six months, the amount of people taking their own readings has gone up 7 per cent to 71 per cent.
