More than a million (1.1m) British couples are risking personal debt issues by not living together, a survey has shown.
The figures from Santander Mortgages showed that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of people in long-term relationship surveyed dont live together.
This results in a combined total of nearly £5,000 (£4,819) extra being spent each year on rent and mortgages.
Phil Cliff, Santander's Director of Mortgages appreciates that some couples prefer living apart, but many are put off by the expense and trouble with mortgages.
Of those questioned, 16 per cent were scared of the costs of buying together, plus the possibility of struggling with home repayments in the future.
