Personal debt plans not good enough, say MPs

A government scheme to help consumers with financial problems is "seriously deficient", according to a House of Commons committee.

The MPs have pointed to a lack of responsibility by one department or individual for co-ordinating all the initiatives as a major reason for the failing.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Department for Work and Pensions, and the Ministry of Justice share responsibility for the strategy.

Personal debt is a major issue in the UK with one in ten people needing help with finances, according to the chairman of the committee of public accounts, Edward Leigh.

Kevin Still, director of Atlantic Finance Management says: "One thing that isn’t in doubt is the need for debt solution providers who are able to offer all-round debt advice."
