There was a boost for those struggling with energy debt yesterday, as regulator Ofgem announced new measures to help troubled consumers.

The changes will see the debt blocking threshold doubled for customers with prepay meters.

This means that people with debts of up to £200 with their current operator will now have the right to switch – allowing an opportunity to save money for those struggling the most.

The announcement comes alongside new regulation which means that direct salespeople must now give energy customers a written quote before any deal can go through.

According to uSwitch.com, almost seven million UK households have signed up to their tariff through a doorstep seller, with less than a quarter feeling that they got a good deal.
