Brits are avoiding the gym to dodge debt problems, a new survey has found.

A study from moneysupermarket.com revealed that Brits are committed to new debt solutions this year.

While almost half believe it is an unnecessary expense, one in ten people are planning to cancel their gym trips to save money. This is up considerably from a figure of just one per cent a year ago.

With some memberships costing as much as £500 a year, Emma Walker, head of protection at the website said that the finding is evidence of consumers being more cautious with their disposable income in what could be a difficult year.

Kevin Still, director at Atlantic, said that there are number of tough decisions to make when looking at what is essential expenditure.

If you are struggling with your finances or are already have debt problems then the gym membership is not an essential expenditure item, he added.

"An extra £40 or £50 per month towards debt repayments or clearing arrears can make a big difference."
