PM acknowledges significant public debt

The Prime Minister David Cameron used his New Year message to acknowledge the difficult current personal financial situations of many members of the public.

The Prime Minister said: “Of course I know that there will be many people watching this who are worried about what else the year might bring. There are fears about jobs and paying the bills. The search for work has become difficult, particularly for young people. And rising prices have hit household budgets. I get that.”

He tried to reassure the public that the government will make every effort to tackle the debt and has the right policies to do so.

David Cameron’s words come in the aftermath of Deputy Editor Nick Clegg’s warning to members of the Liberal Democrats that the “economic rescue mission” that the government is engaged in is far from over.

The Prime Minister’s words will be particularly welcome this month, as credit card debt is set to soar as people struggle to pay back post-Christmas debts.
